Kidney Surgery for Kidney Removal

Kidney SurgeryKidney surgery for kidney removal is not life threatening in itself. A kidney’s main function is to filter the blood and remove waste out of your body through your urine. A person has two kidneys that perform the same job, but you can live with only one if necessary. However, it is important to maintain the health of the remaining kidney to avoid infection, kidney stones, and other impediments that may hinder the function of the lone kidney.

Kidney surgery for kidney removal is called a nephrectomy, which is the surgical procedure for removing the entire kidney. When a small cancerous tumor is found in the kidney then a partial nephrectomy is performed and only the part of the kidney with the tumor is removed. Laparoscopic kidney surgery that uses instruments inserted through small incisions in the body is not as invasive and can make recovery easier for the patient. Any kidney procedure that involves removal of kidney tissue can pose risks to patients. However, modern techniques and advances in technology have increased the benefits for patients suffering from various kidney cancer conditions. Cryosurgery to freeze the kidney mass is another alternative for small kidney tumors of renal cell carcinoma.

Some patients can develop kidney stones that are small, crystallized deposits. These stones can cause intense pain as they block the ureter and impede the flow of urine causing severe spasms. Most kidney stones are small enough to pass on their own. At times, though, a kidney stone can grow so large that it needs to be removed through kidney stone surgery. Believe it or not, the largest kidney stone most doctors may see is the size of a golf ball!

The removal of kidney stones can be done in several ways. Lithotripsy for kidney stones uses sound waves to break up the stones. Surgery for kidney stones can also involve the use of a kidney stone stent. Doctors may insert a kidney stent to help the kidney stone fragments pass. Kidney stents are small narrow tubes placed between the bladder and kidney so that the passageway is opened up. If the stones have caused damage to the kidney, kidney removal surgery or kidney repair surgery may be required.
