Kidney Surgery for Stone Removal

Kidney SurgeryKidney surgery for kidney stones treatment covers removing kidney stones from the kidney, ureter, urethra, and bladder. The most common kidney stone symptoms include intense, sharp pain on your side or flank pain, which is pain on either side of your body between your abdomen and back. This kidney stones pain can also lead to fever, nausea, and blood in urine, which can be microscopic hematuria (blood only seen under a microscope) or gross hematuria (blood seen by the naked eye in the urine).

Kidney surgery for kidney stone removal is performed when a patient is unable to pass a kidney stone. There are several methods of surgery for kidney stones, depending on the patient’s health, medical history, and severity of the condition. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is when doctors make an incision in a patient’s back and directly take out the kidney stones. Doctors may use a ureteroscope and insert a small basket device to catch the kidney stone and safely remove it from the body.

There are several kidney stones causes. Calcium kidney stones are the most common. Sometimes these stones develop as a result of a patient’s diet or an inherited condition. Causes of kidney stones can vary, however. Patients who do not drink enough fluid can become dehydrated, which can in turn decrease the volume of urine and create excessive amounts of substances in the urine, such as uric acid, amino acid, and calcium, that can form stones.

How to pass a kidney stone will depend on several factors. A person should drink ample fluid to help the body naturally pass the stone, most likely within 48 hours. However, a person’s weight, prior history of kidney stones, prostate symptoms such as an enlarged prostate, and the size of the stone can affect how a person will pass kidney stones. A person who suffers from kidney stones will undergo kidney stone treatment to try to avoid a recurrence in the future. Doctors may prescribe a kidney stone diet that includes vitamin supplements, higher intakes of fluids, increase in insoluble fiber, and control of the amount of calcium ingested.

Kidney surgery for kidney stone removal can include different techniques, such as the Holmium laser, to blast the stones into hundreds of pieces that can either help in passing kidney stone fragments or make for easier kidney stone removal. Laparoscopic kidney surgery allows doctors to make small incisions in the patient’s body and insert instruments to remove the kidney stone. Kidney stones lithotripsy breaks up kidney stones with sound waves. Dr Gheiler will insert a kidney stent to help the stone pass out of the body. Surgery for kidney stones, in some extreme cases, can involve nephrectomy surgery to remove all or part of the kidney if it becomes damaged from the stones.
